Pancakes!
Shrove Tuesday or Pancake Day, however you refer to it, is a day dedicated to pancakes. It is the traditional feast day preceding Ash Wednesday, the forgotten day of the two, which marks the start of Lent. Christians traditionally spent Lent as a time of fasting before Easter. Now a days, the period is more generally used for people to ‘give up’ their vices.
As we all indulge today, before the 40 days of fasting, the NHS is gearing up for an increase in burns incidences. We may enjoy making our pancakes, but we aren’t all born to be in the kitchen. Every year on Pancake Day, the NHS witnesses a spike in visits due to burns and the number of visitors to their Burns and Scalds website doubles.
So maybe this year we should spend lent learning better kitchen practises in preparation for Pancake Day 2024!
